Chapter 12

Spanish Stroll

We were off to Spain. One of the firm’s partners had a villa in Nerja on the Costa Del Sol and was letting us have it for two weeks. Apart from school trips to France and Guernsey, I had never been abroad. I didn’t count being born in Canada as obviously I couldn’t remember that. It was all incredibly exciting. As a child, Tom had often gone with his family to France during school holidays. Occasionally, they went to Portugal, which was Tom’s favourite holiday destination. He loved the people and the food. Our family usually went to either Devon or Cornwall where we would stay in a caravan. I have to say, we always had a good time. Nanny took Sarah and me away a few times. We went pony trekking in Somerset which we both loved. Nanny chilled in the hotel whilst we were out riding. Sarah was a fairly accomplished rider and was given a gorgeous spirited pony with a glossy chestnut coat. She would canter off, weaving through the trees, jumping fallen logs and generally having a blast. I was on a small Shetland pony with a huge round belly. He had one speed and that was slow. I honestly think if a bomb had gone off behind him, he wouldn’t have increased his pace. He farted constantly, really loudly. Because I couldn’t ride very well, I was on a leading rein attached to the riding instructor She was a dragon. My pony was dead greedy; all he wanted to do was munch the vegetation and she would shriek, “Don’t let him eat. Keep his head up. Keep his head up.” Let me tell you, stopping a horse from lowering its head if that’s what it has a mind to do is nigh on impossible. I was pulling on the reins, standing up in the stirrups, and I couldn’t do it. I was forever being told off.

Tom and I had something to celebrate. He was being made a partner. That would mean a share in the firm’s profits and a company car. The firm already gave Tom an allowance for petrol which was so generous; it pretty much covered my petrol as well. Tom usually did all the driving, so my mileage wasn’t high. When we got back from holiday, I would be moving to the firm’s office in Fareham to work for the same partner who was lending us the villa. His name was Steven, and he was the firm’s senior partner. I loved working with Tom, but as we were now living together, we both thought it better if I were to move. The day before we were due to leave, we boarded the cats. We now had four. We had given a home to a little black male we got from the RSPCA. He was eight months old. He was the most laid back cat I have ever known. You didn’t even have to hold him to give him a worming pill.
